What do the extreme north and the extreme south have in common? The area around the North Pole is called the Arctic. It has a lot in common with the area around the South Pole, the Antarctic. The two areas have similar plant and animal life, and they are the coldest places on Earth. Animals living on the Arctic Coastal Plain include wolves, caribou, arctic hares, minks, weasels, lemmings, arctic foxes, and polar bears. Seals and walruses can be found near and in the water. Birds living on the Arctic Coastal Plain include arctic terns, ptarmigans, ravens, hawks, and owls. Different kinds of grasses, mosses, and lichens make up the plant life. During the short summer, colorful flowers such as poppies, arctic bluebells, and purple saxifrage bloom. But very few trees can survive in the tundra...
