Few people would refute the importance of the media and mass communication to society as a whole. The concern with the media arises when it takes over and influences different aspects of our lives and/or decision-making processes. Mass media cannot compel a person to change their behavior or commit a violent act. The tendency has to be present for this to occur, but the media can present a mode or method for the act to be completed. The acts of violence that we read about and see on the television tend to be powerfully realistic, whether it is presented on the evening news as fact, or in a movie or book as fiction.
We are bombarded by so much news and information on a daily basis that at times it can be hard to distinguish what is real and what is fantasy. Although there are many different forms of media to discuss, i.e. television, radio, newspapers, movies, internet, etc., the major concern is raised when discussing the "objective" news sources...
