Without conflict a novel would be incomplete. Everyday people and other living things have to face conflict. On the Beach displays many conflicts as the plot unfolds. As in many novels, the external conflict that many characters are facing creates stronger internal conflicts. These conflicts bring you closer to the characters and help you clearly understand the way they are feeling and their place in the novel. On the Beach is a novel taking place after a nuclear war has overtaken the Northern hemisphere. Slowly, the radiation is expected to linger down into the southern regions like Australia, where this story takes place. This novels’ plot is developed around the external conflict of a war that started minute and is now expected to destroy anything left living. Themes are unraveled and internal conflicts arise leaving characters to decide how to live their lives in the last few months, making them realize what is really important, and at last determining how they will terminate their own existence.
