One of Japan's most distinctive employment characteristics is having 'lifetime employment.' This is basically where a company hires a worker right outside of school and keeps them until retirement. The traditional hiring practice involves one large hiring spree in the spring of each year. This is the time when the colleges and universities are graduating students. The hiring company looks for the education in the new employee. The company then takes it upon themselves to provide hands-on training and any other needed education to meet the demands of the new job. There are no written laws with this added security, yet it is implied. This is a way for a company to invest in 'human capital.' (1) This practice has been around since the end of World War II and was possibly the result of excessive employment opportunities with the newly developing economy.
