In looking at the world today, it is hard to believe that any of our technology or sciences could have roots in ancient Egyptian civilization. How could a society, which existed in prehistoric times and lasted for 3000 years, have an effect on life thousands of years later? Although it may not be obvious to us; since we no longer believe cats to be guardians of the underworld or bury our leaders in pyramids, many of our sciences stemmed from ancient Egypt.
Egyptian Pharaohs were infatuated with gold and the acquisition of riches. Their passions lead to highly developed metallurgical skills. The Pharaohs obtained their gold by way of tribute, through warfare and the land was also home to mines of reasonable productivity. In order to purify the gold they used a fleece lined cloth with hanging ends. The sack was vigorously shaken by two men and the impurities would then be washed away and the gold would be left in the fibrous interior. Copper was also mined in the eastern deserts.
