An Obligation to Recover from Sin
All humans have the ability to commit sin because we are imperfect and frail. The mistakes we make always come with consequences: internal or external. Once our mistakes are made and are followed with our punishments, we can choose how they affect us. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne shows the outcome of a life recovered from sin and a life condemned from sin. With this Hawthorne demonstrates that the characters have a moral responsibility to be immaculate but when they make a mistake they have to forgive themselves and then redeem themselves in society.
First, Hawthorne establishes that the character's most important responsibility is to lead a sinless life. He emphasizes that a character's honor, worth, and reputation are ruined by adulterous sins.
