'Advocacy' literally means, 'speaking or pleading with or on behalf of another' to bring about justice. An 'advocate' is one who represents another before a person, or people, in authority - where that person or those people have power to influence decisions and decision-makers. Advocacy involves looking at a problem and continually 'asking why' until you get to the root of the problem. The root is where you then need to begin your work.
There are many types of advocacy. Case advocacy addresses the effects of injustice, oppression and abuse - on a case by case basis. It can be defined as 'speaking out on behalf of the victims of injustice, oppression and abuse'. It involves representing them before a body of authority against the perpetrators of injustice. Issue advocacy addresses the causes of injustice, oppression and abuse - by challenging the underlying issues.
