Australian director Peter Weir displays his own personal feelings of the Gallipoli war and the Australian character through a series of moving images, in his film Gallipoli.
He displays the Australian soldiers in the film as the stereotypical "Aussies", portraying them as smart-mouthed, larrikin, constantly in trouble yet lovable, well meaning, good-natured blokes.
In the film, the message that comes through about the average Australian character is that he is a determined, courageous yet frightened, honourable, friendly, loyal and sentimental larrikin.
The main character in the film is a prime example of determination. His dedication and determination to improve and be the best at running, shows how determined he is to fulfil his dream. This character also shows how he can overcome even the law through his determination and persistence with joining the soldiers fighting in the war at Gallipoli. When he fails his attempt to join the troops, he goes across country, catches a train to another state and manages to join up with the troops there.
The courageous yet frightened characteristic applied to every soldier fighting in the war. Each soldier joined up by their own will, and not because they were conscripted. They were all excited about fighting for their own country, but were nervous and frightened at the same time...
