The story "Of Mice And Men" is a sad, tragic tale of two friends trying to find their place in the world. The story is all about hope, and how the most simple idea can keep a person going. The characters gain and lose hope, and the importance of the idea of having hope is reflected in the actions of the characters in the book. What drives each and every character is a dream they have in their head of how they're life might turn out.
Lennie is a simple, honest hard working man who doesn't understand the majority of what he experiences. He and his best friend George, have no objects they value, no family to live for, no one to love, however they have a simple dream which is what drives their characters. They plan on owning their own house, with their own block of land, with their own animals, and it is this dream that gives the characters something to live for. It is that glimmer of hope that gives them light at the end of the tunnel.
It is not just these two characters who depend on their dreams. Candy's drive came from his companion, his pet dog...
