The Evolving Life of Women in Sport
Through out history the role of a woman in all areas of life have significantly changed- from a working slave and mother, to just strictly a mother and wife, to a mother, wife and career women. Among these roles, the role of female athletes has dramatically evolved over time. Up until the late twentieth century, women were considered the weaker sex in all aspects of physical activity and sports, never being able to compete or participate in the same activities as men. Since then, more and more female athletes have become involved in sports, some even making a career in athletics just like men do. Gender equity among women in sports during the 19th and 20th Century was practically non-existent, but as we enter the 21st Century women's sports have significantly evolved leaving slight room for improvement.
There were many restrictions that didn't allow women to be able to participate in sports in the early 19th Century. "One was strictly the fact that men would not allow them to be involved, they believed that woman only exited as a mother and wife. A very small number were able to gain educational opportunities, let alone participate in sports." (p.65, Women and Sport)...
