Downfall of the Usher Family
In Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Fall of the House of Usher, the narrator comes to visit his sick childhood friend Roderick. Upon arriving at Roderick’s house, the narrator instantly feels an evil effect of the house. The gloomy house eventually overcomes the narrator, as it had already done to his friend Roderick and the wole Usher family. From first sight the narrator feels the effect of the house through the nature around him. ... Poe uses elements of nature to cause the destruction of the Usher family.
One element of nature that Poe uses to destroy the Usher family is the trees. The first impression of the house is a gloomy one, and the narrator instantly feels the effect of the trees on him. When the narrator first rides upon the house he notices the trees, and after feeling the evil atmosphere around the house he notices, “a few white trunks of decayed trees” (Poe 264).
