Life in India, during what is now known as the classical era, can be seen as a very vibrant time period. From an economic standpoint, India became one of the most advanced trading centers of its time. Trade ranged from the rim of the Pacific, through the Middle East, to the Mediterranean Sea, and provided India with both political and inventive growth. The usage of the new iron plow revolutionized the world of agriculture. Culturally speaking, India was also a greatly advanced. People saw family as the foundation of society, with the understanding that dependence could not fall simply on one person, but more reasonably on the entire family. Although Classical India showed various positive attributes in their culture, there were also some negative--One of which was India's social structure.
Classical India had a way of giving every person a specific role in society by dividing of the people into social classes referred to as castes. The intermixing of the castes was forbidden and people were punished for contact with other castes. Of course the higher castes in society were given the "good life" in terms of status and respect, and the lower classes were given the complete opposite...
