Most organisms here on Earth are made up of mostly water. Also three quarters of the Earth's surface is made up of water. Water is tied to almost all types of life. The chemical properties of water make it uniquely suited to be the foundation of all living things because each property is very important to a certain process necessary for life. These properties include cohesion, a high specific heat, a high heat of vaporization, an excellent solvent, colorless, a good light transmitter, and ice, the solid form of water, is less dense than water.
Cohesion is the intermolecular attraction that holds molecules together. This is important for life because water transports through plants against gravity. Cohesion allows the water molecules to be pulled up the plant without the hydrogen bonds being broken. Also adhesion plays a role this process because the adhesion of water to the walls of the veins helps fight against the pull of gravity. The surface tension of water, which is greater than most other liquids, creates an invisible coat on its surface...
