Harwood’s referencing to the universal theme of religion in the poem is shown by the representation of the child’s innocence and faith, ‘disciples’, ‘ monstrance’, ‘bless’, ‘exorcise’. ... Through the use of light as a universal symbol for life, Harwood explains her theme of good and evil through light and darkness. ... This is a universal condition that some children suffer when they have an extensive connection with their parents, and Harwood has addressed this idea, therefore it will always be identifiable and will not have a used by date.
Harwood’s uses a universal device of a musical metaphor, which summarises the anxious confusion of the child awakening to adulthood. ... In the third stanza, Harwood has used symbolism to metaphorically create a parallel between the life of the pumpkin and the life of human beings;
‘so it seemed that the vines were rising
to flourish the fruits of the earth
above their humble station
in airy defiance of nature
-a parable of myself,
a skinful of elements climbing
from earth to the fastness of light;’
The parallel of the human existence after climbing towards the light, and then perishing to the ground, shows a progression of life, whether it be physical or spiritually.
