by: Jeffrex Escano
Marie Deans, founder of Murder Victims’ Families for Reconciliation said and I quote, “After a murder, victims’ families face two things: a death and a crime. ... The answer lies in reducing violence, not causing more death. ... ”
I strongly opposed the death penalty for the following reasons:
1. ...
According to the Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocate in their statistics shows and very evident of death penalty cases made by the Supreme Court from 1995 to 1999. Two out of every three-death sentences handed down by the local courts were found to be erroneous by the Supreme Court. In a study prepared by the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG), and I quote, it pointed out that the result of the review of cases done by the Supreme Court, “point all too clearly to the imperfections, weaknesses and problems of the Philippine justice system. ...
Thousands have been put to death under one government only to be recognized as innocent victims when a new government comes to power. ...
(2) I believe that capital punishment is not necessary for it is an anti-poor. ... The physical pain caused by the action of killing a human being cannot be quantified, nor can the psychological suffering caused by foreknowledge of death at the hand of the state.
(4) As part of my argument why I don’t agree with death penal is because of the nature and effect of the “Naked truth” regarding the execution through lethal injection. I believe that there is a need to know what is really behind the process of lethal injections and with this, I and members from this side, opposed the execution of heinous crimes convicts. ... “We are conditioned to believe that it is okay to strap somebody to a hospital-like gurney, sedate them and inject them with lethal chemical poison and have that person fall asleep painlessly,” said Rick Halperin, President of the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.
