Gary Soto recreates his memeory from childhood when he was six years old stealing a pie and the guilt that followed him thereafter. In this piece repetition, imagery, and poin of view are prevelant throughout.
Repetition is used in this piece to convey a meaningful message about the guilt that Soto felt after commiting the crime of stealing. After Soto ate the pie he told himself "A car honked, and the driver knew. Mrs. Hancock stood on her lawn, hands on hips, and she knew, my mother, peeling a mountain of potatoes at the Redi- Spud factory knew." From this quote the reader can tell that although none of these people actually spoke to Soto, he felt as though everyone knew he had done a terrible thing. Soto's guilt overtook him and made him aware that at age six it was still wrong to steal even if you want something so bad you can't take it becaause enevitably you will think that everyone you know or is around you knows what you did.
Imagery used in this piece makes the reader think in terms of religion and Christ. Soto makes notaions to God and the bible...
