Vincent is justified in pursuing the course that he does due to he is a character with great courage and a goal driven individual who is determined to do anything to go up into space. This aspect of Vincent's can be noticed in a number of scenes, however this is particularly made evident when he goes through with the extreme surgery from becoming an invalid (Vincent) to a valid (Jerome), where he comment 'I took my mind off the pain by reminding myself that when I eventually did sand, up, I'd be exactly two inches closer to the stars'. Another indication of the seriousness of Vincent's passion to go into space was the fact that he never doubted himself or his misfortunes. Critics told Vincent 'that the only way he'll see the inside of a spaceship is if he is cleaning it. But Vincent did not accept such comments and through pride and determination he steers himself in the right direction and eventually becomes 'a member of a relatively new and particularly detested segment of society'
Jerome is not able to get over being second place in the position he has in life due to the fact he was a 'vitro' birth whose 'genes were selected and manipulated to remove any imperfections'. Jerome could be considered as an immaculate individual who felt as though he was a disgrace to both society and himself as he had no excuses to fail. "Despite every opportunity' he missed his chance to succeed, there fore leading himself to believe he was a failure. Unlike Vincent Jerome victimizes himself, as he believes that his only chance of existence is to commit suicide, yet Jerome fails this attempt as well. This has lead Jerome to something he has never overcome, and is particularly evident when he tells Vincent "If at first you don't succeed try, try again'.
I think Anton is not protecting Vincent but instead thinks Vincent is worthless and of little consequence...
