A Utilitarian's Opinion of the War
Utilitarianism is an ethical philosophy created by John Stewart Mill that concerns itself with the action and the consequence of that action. It doesn't matter what the person's personality, flaws, social standing, anything for that matter. What only matters are the action and the consequence? There is no space for judging people you only judge their action(s). Hence, a bad person can do a moral deed, the good person can do an immoral deed, and vice versa. For utilitarianism that which is moral are those that create the most happiness, the greatest pleasure, for the greatest amount of people and that pleasure is more than personal it must benefit society as a whole. Mill pointed out that the pleasure that he concerns with in this ethical philosophy deals with the quality of the pleasure. For example which is the higher quality of pleasure, a basketball game or a Beethoven concert? Mill said that the only person that can decide which is the higher of the two is someone who can appreciate both entertainment the fullest. And that someone, Mill believes, will choose the Beethoven concert...
