Koyaanisqatsi Film Analysis
Koyaanisqatsi is a movie without any plot, characters, or dialogue. It allows the
viewer to negotiate their own meaning to the images presented before them. It is a
collection of beautiful, as well as disturbing, slow and fast moving footage, combined
with music created to coincide with the visuals. It was created to show the process and
effect of evolution.
At the very beginning, the camera lingers on ancient Hopi Indian cave paintings
of human figures. The camera slowly exits the cave revealing beautiful nature scenes.
These scenes include mountains, clouds, the sea, and the sky. It then shifts from nature
and begins to focus on human society, beginning with rows of flowers and then power
lines. Soon the viewer begins to see many aspects of man and technology. It shows
random people and machines, as well as spectacular footage of buildings blowing up, city
lights at night, sped up traffic (similar to footage of clouds), computer chips, satellite
images, and much, much more...
