Imagine it is 1967, and after swallowing an entire bottle of Aspirin you find yourself in a psychiatric hospital. You are diagnosed with a character disorder that you know very little about. At the age of 19, Susanna Kaysen found herself secluded from the outside world for the next two years. After falling into a deep depression and becoming suicidal, she was diagnosed with a Borderline Personality Disorder by a psychiatrist whom she had previously never met. After only a three hour appointment, he decided she should “take a rest” at Mclean Hospital. After a short taxi ride, she voluntarily checked herself into this new home. While at the hospital she encounters a whole new crowd of people. She now lives with Lisa who is a Sociopath and Polly who is a kind-hearted victim of burn abuse. She also meets Daisy, a depressed anorexic who will eventually commit suicide, Cynthia, and Georgina. Many of the patients who have delusions, can’t behave, or come in talking “crazy” are treated with Thorazine.
