Hip-hop is a culture. Its main elements consist of rapping, disc jockeys, graffiti and break dancing. In the movie Brown Sugar, two best friends, Dre and Sidney, discover that on the day they met not only did they fall in love with hip-hop, but also with each other. Their introductions sparked the beginning of a love for a culture that is one of the most influential cultures to ever exist. My first encounter with hip-hop did not involve falling in love with a friend. It was during a car ride as I heard a faint rap song on the radio. And as the movie Brown Sugar gracefully depicts, hip-hop is an entity I grew to love.
After leaving May Fu, a popular Chinese restaurant in Miami, Florida, my mother, three of my cousinsKeon, Kia, and Tramesaand myself headed back to my aunt's house. During the ride, my mom and Tramesa loudly carried on several conversations pertaining to the topics women usually discussshopping, hair and nails. Although the radio was on, it was difficult to hear it; but during a rare and brief silence between my mom and Tramesa, I could hear rapid, yet harmonic voices coming from the car speakers...
