Death of Yugoslavia
The Ottoman Turks invaded the Balkans in the 14th century and continued to occupy the land for 500 years. During this time, they spread their Islamic beliefs everywhere. After World War 1, the allies created the state of Yugoslavia, which meant land of the south Slavs and then in 1941 Nazi Germany divided much of Yugoslavia. Tito leading a rebellion against Hitler fiercely fought the Nazis. Many people were slaughtered during this time.
Tito became prime minister and refused to join either Russia or the US. This infuriated Stalin and a blockade was formed. Tito then played both sides of the coin, took loans from the West, and bought from the Russians. This is how they were able to maintain such a high standard of living.
