Blame the voters, blame the laws, argue the validity of elections. For these reasons and many more, the United States has a fundamentally unsound election system. Two political parties; the Democrats and Republicans, control most of the gates and keys to the presidential election. However, third-party candidates have had very profound and lasting effects on elections during the past several decades. Key elections have been swayed or lost due to the work of a small number of brave souls who put themselves and their money on the line for the betterment of our nation. In this essay, the reasoning behind our political system and the effects of third-party candidates will be discussed. As citizens of the most powerful country in the world, it's expected that Americans understand the shortcomings of the U.S. election system, the influence of third-party candidates, and that they put in the effort to make a firm and educated decision about its future.
