Bob Marley
My name is Bob Marley. I was born Robert Nesta Marley on February 6, 1945 in the village Nine Miles in Jamaica. My father was an English army captain named Norval Marley, who was the superintendent of the Crown lands; my mother was an 18 year old Jamaican named Cedella Malcolm. I did not know my father very well because he left my mother shortly after their wedding. My mother and I lived in Nine Miles until 1957, when we moved to Trenchtown. I soon met Neville O'Riley Livingston, better known as Bunny, and we made fast friends. Both of us were very interested in music, especially artists like Ray Charles, Fats Domino and Curtis Mayfield that we heard while picking up American stations on our radio. By the late '50s, I had dropped out of school, and was working as a welder. Bunny and I found a teacher in singer Joe Higgs, one of Trenchtown's famous residents.
