New technologies of early days were dominated by the chief methods of modulation associated with broadcasting whose names are very familiar, (am) amplitude modulation and (fm (frequency modulation) 1they were mono radio systems with one channel one source single speaker this was the norm with respect to radio. As time matured FM became more popular, as early days AM radio was king and FM was the stepchild to AM. Broadcasters used FM as a background and non-generating revenue activities such as just listening for enjoyment.
FM radio because of its technical makeup from AM became more popular eventually it developed stereo broadcast. As years went by FM developed with clear stereo broadcast and became the major medium for music programming.
Over the years AM became the stepchild to FM, with its program being regulated to talk news narrow niche programming.
Historically there have been attempts to prove upon radio quality of AM without commercial success. AM stereo was not widely embraced by the broadcast industry and met a relatively sudden death,
Early attempts were made to improve upon FM sound with quadraphonic sounds
(Four-channel sound), this also met a relatively sudden death as well.
