Some of the Sherlock Holmes stories that we studied were 'The Speckled Band', 'The Read Headed League' and 'The Man with the Twisted Lip'. All of the stories were prime examples of detective fiction. They all had common points that are found in most detective fiction, such as, a sidekick and clues to help the reader guess and become involved in the story. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the Sherlock Holmes stories in 1887. His stories were published in the strand and were a big hit. The stories were written for the entertainment of people who read the strand and they were a huge success. In 1893 the Strand published 'The Final Problem', in the story Sherlock Holmes plunged of the Reichenbach falls with his arch rival Professor Moriarty. They both died. Conan Doyle had planned to kill them off so that he could write a more serious book. Immediately there was a public outcry and Sherlock Holmes was soon back...
