Business Environment
The session was based on the corporate responsibility of businesses towards the society. Various dimensions of conducting business in an ethical and socially responsible manner were discussed. The key points I felt to be a manager's guiding principle towards corporate responsibility is by considering the ethical aspects during the decision making process be it be shareholder wealth, investments, reporting and accountability procedures.
The discussion topic of the day was regarding corporate social responsibility with a case study under examination. It was the general conclusion of the group that setting short term goals for a long term objective is a more acceptable measure than a manager, who makes decisions to meet the short term profits of the firm during his term. This raises the issue of social responsibility towards the long term welfare of the company and the stakeholders.
Many held the opinion that Entrepreneur's main function is not to create jobs but to make profits; this I believe is a rather radical approach to business. Personal viewpoint is that by making a decision to enter a Entrepreneurship venture you a re taking up a challenge and a responsibility to create jobs As much as creating profits, you have a social responsibility towards the society in which your entrepreneurship thrives, to create oppu4rtunities and careers for the others.
Through the examples of Bhopal tragedy and the Brent spar affair, the serious consequences of unethical business measures were made clear.
