Niccolo Machiavelli was a Florentine diploma from the Renaissance period. Machiavelli wrote The Prince to ignite a strong ruler in Italy. Machiavelli cynically advises a would-be prince to appear to be generous, be merciful but not cruel and constantly think of war, if he worries to be a good leader.
Machiavelli advises a would-be prince to appear to be generous even if he is not. A prince must make the people believe in his generosity. In Machiavelli's words if a prince wants to "maintain his reputation for generosity, to burden the people with excessive taxes and to do everything possible to raise funds"(41). Machiavelli also said, that " the present king of France waged many wars without imposing taxes only because his parsimony provided the expenditures"(42). The two example that I provided show how they were lying to the people because the people didn't win anything out of this.
Machiavelli also explains to the prince-to-be that he should be feared but not hated. Machiavelli recommends the prince to-be "that every prince must desire to be considered merciful and not cruel"(43)...
