It wasn't the first time I had pondered over his seeming obsession with money and material possessions. Here we were having another conversation about it, with him telling me that being financially secure "has always been really important" to him. He told me that some part of him wishes he were twenty-five right now, instead of almost nineteen, so that he would be making more money. But the idea of happiness and security always being around the corner seems so illusive to me, and the cynical part of me wanted to point out that even when my friend reached this goal in his life, it probably wouldn't be all that he expected it to be.
For the sake of this essay, I will call my friend Dylan. Dylan and I have known each other for roughly a year. We both work at the same pizza parlor and see each other often. So naturally, I've begun to take note of his views on certain issuesand his behavior in various circumstances. I've noticed the excitement and joy that getting tips for his pizza deliveries brought him. I've also noticed that, if there is a particular house that he knows tips well, Dylan will try his hardest to get that delivery, or encourage others to do so...
