Jow Rose is a scientific writter, in a long term relationship with Clarissa. An everyday picnic leads him and others to go to the assistance of a hot air balloon in distress. The out come being the death of one of the fellow helpers, and a strange converstaion with another, Parry.
McEwan uses Parry's mental condition, one where he thinks Joe is in love with him and leading him on, as well as haveing religious conertations, to detail how one mans actions can destroy the life of another. The first contact of Parry following the accident seems strange, but stupid, and Joe doesnt really think its a serious problem. Over a period of time, Parry stalks Joe, stands outside his flat, bombards him with phone calls.
Joe's two main problems are that as he destroted the 29 taped phone messages he recieved from Parry in one day, he has no real eveidence that parry exists or is stalking him.
Clarissa begins to think that it is all in his mind, and when he goes to the Police, they can do little as Parry hasn't threatened Joe with harm. he only tells him he loves him, and he knows its hard but they must be together...
