1. Rotary and Dual Tone Multi-frequency (DTMF)
Rotary is a sequence of on and off pulses, similar to flicking a light switch off an on a certain number of times that is standard representation each numeric character. DTMF, also know as Touch Tone, is different in that it is two separate frequencies, one from a low group of four the other from a high group of four. They combine to make one single tone that the telephony company can interpret.
2. Wide Area Telecommunications Service (WATS) and leased lines
WATS is a direct distance dialing toll service where a dedicated line setup by the customer, which allows either inbound or outbound calls (not both), between the customer's premises and a specific geographic area. Monthly charges are based on the distance/size of the area in which the calls are placed, not on the number or length of calls. Leased lines are also permanent telephone connections and also between two points. The difference is that leased lines are setup by the telephone company instead of the customer.
