In the play Oedipus Rex, it is well known by the reader, and Oedipus himself, that he is fated to kill his father and marry his mother. Throughout the play, Oedipus is battling for his future and his past; trying with all his might to prevent the horrible fate he destined to fulfill. Ultimately, Oedipus's life is centered on liberating himself from his dark past and gaining self deliverance.
Oedipus's first attempt to free himself from the chains of destiny was seen early in his life. Upon hearing from the oracle that he would some day murder his father and marry his mother, he fled from the city of Corinth. Unfortunately, the oracle did not bless him with the knowledge of who his actual parents were. Oedipus did not know that King Polybos and Queen Merope were not his biological parents. Oedipus believed that if he left his family, he could outrun his doomed future. Sadly, he would only bring his destiny closer by leaving the gates of Corinth.
After slaying the Sphinx and becoming the King of Thebes, Oedipus attempted to once again free himself from his tragic past...
