Autotrophic:The organism that Ive selected is cactus and its being classified under the plant kingdom, its grouping and it made up the family Cactaceae, cacti with fully formed leaves are classified in the genera Pereskia and Pereskiopsis. The night-blooming flowers and the saguaro plant are classified in the genus Cereus. The Christmas cactus is classified as Schlumbergera bridgesii.Ive chose this organism because I would like to know more information about this specific plant as Im very interested in how cactus with its own unique characteristics, be able to withstand the heat and the cold in the desert. The family contains about 1650 species, most of which are adapted to arid climates. Because cacti require little care and exhibit bizarre forms, they were popular for home cultivation and are coming under increasing pressure as a result. More than 17 kinds of cacti is now facing extinction because of plundering by collectors and professional poachers. They would usually consist of spiny stems and roots. Leaves are greatly reduced or dont even exist, the stems of cacti are usually swollen and fleshy, that are being adapted to water storage, and many are shaped in ways that would cause rain to flow directly to the root system for absorption. Every day the cactus produces anywhere from one to four small pink fruits which is pushed up and out of the top of the cactus, when the lizard sees a fruit, it climbs up and grabs it as it has a higher water content which is essential for the lizard, the seeds then pass through the lizards intestinal tract and are dispersed to other areas as the lizard defecates...
