Education is the method by which people gain knowledge, skills, and manners. It helps people value their cultural heritage and allows them to become more productive members of society. Education also helps people to adjust to change, which is crucial since social changes take place with increasing speed and alter the lives of more and more people. Many scholars and philosophers have conflicting views about education and what constitutes an education under what we call a democratic society. John Dewey, Gunther Kress, and Geoffrey Sirc, are some of the many scholars that have opposing views about education.
In "Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the philosophy of Education," author John Dewey focuses on addressing the challenge of providing excellent public education in a democratic society. He argues that it is very important that education not only involved teaching students facts, but also that the skills and knowledge that students are taught be included into their everyday lives in and out of school. He also states that the concept of play and work should be included in the school curriculum, otherwise there will not be an effective learning environment. He further explains his interest and importance in multi-modality.
