Eva Hesse-Painter and Sculptor,1936-1970
Eva Hesse was born in Hamburg, Germany on January 11, 1936. Her family escaped the Nazis and arrived in New York in 1939. She became a United States citizen in 1945. When she was ten years old, her mother committed suicide. Full of anxiety most of her life, Eva still continued in her pursuit of making art. In the next few years, she switched from school to school until she arrived at Yale University, New Haven. There she studied painting with Josef Albers, until in 1959, she returned to New York, where she worked as a textile designer.
In 1961, Hesse was in a series of exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum and at the John Heller Gallery, New York. That year, she was married to the sculptor Tom Doyle. She made her first three-dimensional object (a costume made of chicken wire and soft jersey) for a show organized by Allan Kaprow, Walter De Maria, and others in 1962...
