Since I came to Hawaii, the most frequently asked question is "where are you from?" As soon as people know I am Chinese, here comes the second popular question "Which part of China do you belong to?" Unfortunately, people are usually more familiar with Beijing and Shanghai such big city but know little about my hometown--Yunnan Province. So I decide to write something about Yunnan to introduce this beautiful place to others. I'd like to talk about its geographical characteristics, its history and its special culture.
Yunnan, on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in the southwest of China, is a land of natural beauty and mystery, which covers an area of 97,360,330 acres with a population of 40 million. Its mountainous lands that lie just below the Tibetan plateau and abut Vietnam, Laos and Burma to the south distinguish Yunnan from others. In few provinces of China is so great a diversity of natural conditions and culture to be found as in Yunnan. Yunnan has an unique array of fascinating ecotourist resources, including year-round snow-capped mountains and glaciers, lakes and hot springs, highland landscapes, primitive forests, and tropical rain forests where elephants and monkeys roam.
