Doug Hanson was in need of a car for several reasons. One of the main reasons why he needed a new car was that "..every morning before starting his car, he said a quick prayer before turning the key in the ignition" hoping that it will start. The Celica had already broken down on him once before and it had approximately 330,000 kilometres on it. Under the PSSP hierarchy of needs this illustrates how Doug needs safety and reliability. He also has social and personal needs which need to be fulfilled with regards to his purchasing a new car, and this was evident when he turned down Edna Johnson's offer on the Buick. Even though the Buick was a perfect opportunity to purchase a great automobile at an extremely affordable price it did not seem like the most ideal car for him.
