When Celie was fourteen years old, she was raped repeatedly by her stepfather. She gave birth to two children and then became sterile. Therefore she never saw her children for they were taken away from her by her stepfather and given to the wife of a missionary who could not have children. After the rapes, Celie hated and feared men but she didn't fear women. She was then married off to a man who liked her younger sister Nettie. Her sister was smart and a fast learner at school; she and Celie loved each other deeply.
