Both Odysseus of the Odyssey and Beowulf are heroic characters that personify the great aspects of their cultures. Odysseus represents all of the important entities that make up Greek culture. Beowulf stands for the important qualities of a hero in Anglo Saxon culture. Greek and Anglo Saxon cultures differ greatly as do the heroes that represent each culture.
Odysseus was a well-respected and true king in this beginning age of Greece. To be a good king in Greek times, one must be just and peaceful. Odysseus was not only just and peaceful, but was a friend of his people and would not turn away one of his citizens. He always conducted himself in a respectful and hospitable manor. Aside from being a wonderful king, Odysseus was also a family man and a quality leader of his men with whom he had endured many hardships and battles. Odysseus was always fighting to get home to his wife and son and trying to get his men home safely as well...
