The Affects of Context
In the "Introduction" by Maria Tatar, she introduces the diverse tales within Grimm's Grimmest by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, and uses different types of context to prepare the reader for the unique interpretation of these tales. Context is how certain elements of a story help develop the meaning behind the complete piece of work. The context allows the reader to truly understand what the words distinctly mean and represent. Concrete details help form context, allowing the writer to reach out and use other elements such as other writings to help prove their thesis. The formation of context allows the reader to get invested in the piece of literature and be completely focused. The Oxford Dictionary states the definition of context as, "Parts that surround and clarify a word or passage." The context that Tatar creates is powerful and makes the reader analyze how true her statements about society are. Tatar uses her own personal commentary to demonstrate how, "these stories open a window onto social and psychological landscape of another culture and challenges us to reflect on our own relationship to the world." These tales might be rough, but they represent how past and current societies are based around violence and danger. However, they depict real life situations which people relate to the tales...
