The American Revolution marked the beginning of the War for Independence from British control. Without a great development of the colonists’ sense of identity as America and unity as Americans, they could not have succeeded in initiating this war and leading revolts against the British prior to the Revolution. Colonists first felt stronger ties to England than they did to one another, but appeals for colonial unity and intercolonial trade began to rise and gave birth to a common colonial identity. This identity was further perpetuated after the French and Indian War, and powerful colonial leaders gathered to fight off British regulations. Finally, as exemplified through violent revolts and battles, colonists came together and fought for their independence and political autonomy.
