When I was growing up I believed that my parents loved me but they didn't understand me. Throughout my childhood I felt like the black sheep. "I love" you was very rarely spoken around the house, but I knew that my parents loved me. I do believe that you must first understand someone before you can really love that person, but I don't think that applies to my family. Some people have family that love and understand them and some have family that could care less. My parents love me but never understood me.
In the book The Education Of Little Tree by Forrest Carter, Granma and Granpa spoke about loving and understanding. They would go around saying "I kin ye" which meant I love you, or I understand you. Whichever was fine with them because Granma believed that in order to truly love someone or something, you have to first understand that person.
