The Transtheoretical Model of Health Promotion
The Transtheoretical model was developed by James O. Prochaska in 1979, in an effort to understand how people intentionally change. Prochaska was in search of a framework that could explain and predict how people successfully conducted self-change Guillot, Kilpatrick, Hebert, and Hollander (2004). The Transtheoretical Model contains four components: the stages of change, process of change, decisional balance, and self-efficacy. These components allows for the user to facilitate change for target populations. Although this model originally was utilized with addictive behaviors such as alcohol and smoking, it is now used in exercise, diet, and rehabilitative programs.
