Maintaining Public Memories

Throughout history, one must consider how the information they are learning about got into the written form or maybe the verbal form. As one goes further back into history, facts are not so clear and they have not been written down correctly. With some events, nothing is written down at all. When one encounters this type of situation, they are usually basing their facts on written words by someone who was not actually part of the historical event. A "word of mouth" type historical documentation. There are those people in history that have private memories and there are those who have public memories. We have those public memories. Our duty as Americans is to take into account how our ancestors tried to save the private and public memories of the way we became an independent nation and to maintain those same public memories if not to create more as we see fit.
First, private versus public memory must be defined. One must be able to tell the difference if they are to look further into "inventing" that public memory...
