In Chapter Eleven of Farewell to Manzanar, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston describes that whoever is over seventeen years is required to swear a Loyalty Oath. The oath consists of two yes-or-no questions: the first question is willing to server in the U.S. military; the second question will swear allegiance to the United States and renounce allegiance to Japan. The oath becomes a topic of debate in camp. Although the Japanese Americans do not know how to respond to the Loyalty Oath, they know that in the case to answer "NO NO" will be shipped back to Japan; and in the other case to answer "Yes Yes" will be drafted in to the U.S. military. Pro-Japan forces, who are trying to organize a "NO NO" vote by blocks in order to boycott the oath, demonstrate their allegiance to the Japanese empire. And "Papa", wo decides to answer "Yes Yes", because he believes that America will win the war, and he doesn't want to send back to Japan...
