There are 3 truly great moments in movie history. The invention of the camera in the 1890’s, the invention of sound movies in the early 1920’s, and the Hollywood Renaissance which lasted from 1965-1975. The best part of the renaissance though was the 70’s. The 70’s is responsible for the disaster movie, the teen movie, the adult musical, the cult movie, the sci-fi movie, the blockbuster, along with several subgenres. One thing that all the genres had in common was that they reflected the time period. Movies of the 1970’s reflect the political, social, and economic concerns of the time. Politically, when the 70’s came about America was right in the middle of the Vietnam War, which didn’t end until 1975, though America withdrew it’s forces a few years earlier. Although the Vietnam War started in the 60’s, many important events of Vietnam occurred in the 70’s, including the conclusion. In the 1960’s the Northern Communist part of Vietnam wanted the southern part of Vietnam to become Communist as well. Unfortunately because of this war broke out between Northern and Southern Vietnam. U.S. President Johnson sided with the South, and sent the U.S. troops out to help. This did not go over well with the majority of the American Citizens, particularly when the draft was started. The American youth made up a majority of the anti-war demonstrators, though the campus strikes didn’t really get going until Nixon took over in the 70’s. Vietnam lasted about 10 years, and Nixon finally made a settlement in 1973. American citizens hated the war for a variety of reasons. One of the reasons was that people saw the Americans as evil slaughterers, going to war to kill the Vietnamese. Others were angry because American soldiers were giving up their lives for a cause that wasn’t really American, or have anything to do with America, but whatever the reason, people didn’t like the war. Another political issue of the 70’s was Watergate. President Nixon wanted to get re-elected desperately; a little too desperately. Some of his advocates broke into the Democratic Headquarters at the Watergate Hotel and stole some very important files. Nixon did get re-elected, but after the scandal was revealed to the media and public, impeachment followed. Apparently and informant called “Deep Throat” contacted Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, both writers for the Washington Post, and told Nixon was connected to Watergate. This also didn’t go over too well with the American’s and Nixon left his position in shame. Many other political events happened in the 70’s, but these were by far the most notable. There were several great movies released in the 70’s pertaining to political events. Some of the greatest films to be released in the 70’s were Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, and Apocalypse Now. Taxi Driver was a very deep depressing movie by Martin Scorsese about what a man who survived Vietnam goes through socially. He slowly isolates himself from the world around him, and this movie creates a strong sympathy for him. It gets to the point where he kills just to be seen as a hero. Under other circumstances he would have been seen as a poser, willing to do anything for his reputation as a hero, but this movie makes it seem like he actually is a hero. The movie is set up so that you understand what it’s like for him when he feels unloved and you understand why he will go to such great lengths to be liked.
