The Values and Lessons from "The Necklace"

"The Necklace" by Gay De Maupassant was written in 1884 and actively reflects the cultural values of that time. In today's society is not any different then the values of 1884. Women's presence has always been in terms of political and social power. The best way to show that you were in the higher class of people was to buy the expensive material goods. This will bring up the assumptions about women's place within the social content of the times. "The Necklace" is a prime example of the numerous limits women of the nineteenth century were not able to change to. The values involved in "The Necklace" are loyalty, honesty, and friendship. There are also some negative values in the story like greed.
