America’s Most Ignored Problem: The Electoral College
The Electoral College was created over 200 years ago and ever since has become one of America’s most controversial issues. The flaw in the Electoral College is highlighted in the 2000 election in which President Bush won the presidency without winning the popular vote: Al Gore had 50,992,335 popular votes and Bush had only 50,455,156. Bush won because he had the majority electoral votes: 271 with the close sweep of Florida beating Gore’s 266 votes. The Electoral College was designed in a time when America was in diapers and the Founding Fathers had little faith in the common people to make an educated vote for president and for right reason. ... Our country and its citizens have changed drastically since that time and virtually everyone with the desire be educated can with the advancements and technology we have today-it is time the Electoral College is revised to reflect the progressive changes our country has accomplished.
Though it has only happened four times, a candidate does not need the popular vote to assume presidency- he must win 270 of the 538 electoral votes. Each state is granted a certain number of electoral votes-two for its two senators and one for each of its House of Representatives (based on population with a minimum of one).
