Writers use various techniques to make their writing interesting and pleasing to readers. One method is to use vivid descriptions to give the readers a sense that they are there. Three examples are: John Updike's "A&P," Richard Rodriguez's "The Lonely, Good Company of Books," and Maya Angelou's "Graduation." All of these essays utilize intricate description to keep the reader interested and to lend the story a sense of realism. The descriptive elements in these stories are what make them strong and interesting papers.
While these three authors use description to make their papers pleasurable, other authors use other methods. For example, in the essay "Get a Knife, Get a Dog, But Get Rid of Guns," the author, Molly Ivins, uses humor and straightforward language to make her writing interesting. Ivins' writing is easily followed due to her simple diction and easy-to-relate-to sense of humor. Though the description is not as strong, "Get a Knife, Get a Dog, But Get Rid of Guns" is an equally enjoyable paper for different reasons.
