For years and years up until recent times women have been mistreated for their gender. In the book The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorn shows great example of this through the character Hester. If Hester had been a man none of the mistreatment that she got would have happened. Hawthorne defiantly makes his point that women are inferior to men in this novel, especially women who commit adultery. He portrays Hestor to be a worthless woman. Most of the people in the town do not want to be seen talking to her or even wearing her clothes that she had so beautifully made. Chillingworth on the other hand is probably a worse person than Hestor yet the novel does not portray this at all.
